Struggling With Your New Years Resolution? Read this...

The following is my Purposeful Strength newsletter from January 12th 2021. For those of you who are on the newsletter (thank you!), you’ve read this before, but maybe need to re-see some of the concepts. For those of you who have no clue what any of that mean, this is the newsletter that I send out every Tuesday morning at 11am. One More Look

As a kid my favorite sport was lacrosse. 

Let me rephrase that...as a kid, the only sport I was any good at, was lacrosse. 

My skill level isn’t the moral of the story, thank goodness. 

One of our offensive strategies was called ‘one more look’. The gist of the scheme was that when the offense is working the ball around and the player who thinks they have the best shot gets ready to fire away, rather than taking that shot, they need to look for one last pass to get a high percentage shot close to the goal. 

This concept absolutely relates to the goals we set in our very real lives. 

Let me break it down. 

Being on offense = willing to set a goal

Circling the ball = formulating a few plans to achieve that goal

Offensive player thinking the first shot is the best = narrowing it down to a singular plan 

One more pass = breaking that plan one step further to create smaller, achievable, action 

Sports analogies for life. Someone call Paramount and get this guy a movie deal.

But in all seriousness, our goal setting process is often lacking ‘one more look’. That last effort is the difference between a decent or can’t miss shot. When it comes to our goals the more can’t miss opportunities we have, the more achievable they become. 

And that’s why we set goals, right? We want to achieve that shit.

Maybe this is a timely read for you as you are close to two weeks into your New Year's resolutions. 

How are they going? 

If you’ve had troubles, I want to challenge you right now. 

  1. Write the resolution down. Physically write it down so you can see it. 

  2. Now write down your initial plan to achieve that resolution. 

  3. One more look. Make the last pass. Find the easiest path to action. This is your starting point. 

Your action will drive results. With each result your motivation will grow. With growing motivation you start to breed consistency and sustainability towards your goal. 

You’ve created a high powered offense that can achieve anything you want. You just have to make that last pass.
