The missing link in your fitness program

The following is a re-air of the Purposeful Strength Newsletter from June 29th…a great example of why even keeping it simple doesn’t help you stay consistent in taking action.

Enjoy!

I spent some time last night hanging out with Google.

I do this on occasion, probably once a quarter. I just sit down with my laptop and start searching for various key terms and phrases related to health, wellness, fitness, and nutrition. Sometimes it’s the buzzwords I’ve been hearing from clients and other times it’s just me typing in the classics to see what shows up on the first results page.

Last night I tried the phrase “Fitness for beginners”, just curious to see what would show up.

A casual 291,000,000 answers popped up.

More importantly, the snippet that was displayed showed this

And the first few result links were these bad mofo’s

As I scrolled through the first page of results, I couldn’t help but think of two things that new clients often tell me within MINUTES of our first conversation with each other.

Client question number 1...“What should I be doing in the gym?”

Client question number 2…”What do I need to know when I start going to the gym?”

These two things didn’t show up in any of the above articles. Nada, zero times.

**Reader looks through the images again and thinks “uhh those programs tell you what you should be doing and what you need to know...what the hell, Casey”**

Here’s the thing. Those links will give you some random shit to do in the gym. They might even give some awesome videos on how to do them too.

BUT it’s not what you need. (Hint, hint notice the tense)

That’s where people drop the ball on their fitness goals. They look for other places and people to tell them what they think they need without taking into consideration their own needs, wants, and desires.

Your fitness is yours and no one else's. It’s 100% acceptable to be selfish...set your goals...set your expectations...set your desired outcomes...it’s yours! You can! Anyone who tells you different is a jackass.

In this case, it’s Google. Damn you, Google!

So the takeaway this week is this. When you get that itch to start training. When you buy that gym membership or order the gym equipment, remember to take your wants, desires, and needs into consideration.

How long you want your sessions to be, how many times a week you want to workout, the time of day you can make it a sustainable ritual in your everyday...the selfish things you need to iron out so that you can take the pressure away from what someone or something else tells you what to do.

That’s the missing link. Navigate that and you’ll find a more enjoyable, long term solution to your fitness goals.

Crush it this week. You got this.
