I Turned My Garage Into A State-Of-The-Art Personal Training Studio...

I remember when we first toured our house. The builder hadn’t yet finished the renovation, and pulled back a tarp leading to the garage. I took one look at my wife and she just nodded in agreement.

The attached 1-car garage was going to be a gym.

I’m not stranger to home gyms. The house we had been renting had a nice workout space as well. Nothing ever ‘too’ crazy, as I worked in a commercial gym at the time, but just a nice place to workout in quiet and not have to leave the house when we would get the inevitable snow in the Vermont winters.

But this gym was going to be different! I knew some day that this gym would be MINE!

You see, in 2016 my wife and I were on the verge of opening our own gym in Saratoga, New York. If it wasn’t for a town zoning director named Steve giving me a bad zone on the unit I wanted to rent, we would have pulled the trigger. However, the dominos fell the other way and the poor zoning report blew up our budget.

I like to think that that whole gym-building experience was my Master’s Thesis in ‘Small Business Ownership’ as the lessons learned continue to pay-off to this day. With the biggest lesson being, how can I make the lease on a training space the most cost-effective.

Simple. Make it a part of your home.

In August 2023, we flipped the switch and went full studio mode.

First the Garage door came off and a beautiful 6-foot slider was installed.

(Shout out to my brother, Cody, for scoring me the door and anther shout out to my Dad, Shanon, for installing that sucker)

Second, fresh paint was added to the ceiling and wall where the garage door had been.

(This shout out goes to our friend, Jen, who painted two coats while I was away on a work trip!)

Third, ya boy came in and fixed the yukked-up floor, added some finishing details, and installed some beautiful new lighting.

What was important with this renovation is that it be done right from the start. The past three years I have focused on the online portion of my business while our young family ‘grows up’ a little bit and now that the kids are getting a tiny bit more independent, the goal is to absolutely welcome back in-person personal training clients!

Making sure the gym had it's own entrance, it’s own bright, private space, and top of the line equipment to match top of the line coaching, has always been a dream!
